Can definitions be added to the database?
Definitions cannot be added to the database. However, the database has over 5,000 entries and this should cover the needs of most users. Terms and definitions are added and modified on a regular basis. These changes will be made available on a download basis and at no charge to registered users from the MathResources Web site.
Are there biographies of mathematicians in the database?
There are over 400 biographical sketches in The MathResource. Approximately 100 come with pictures and this number will be increased within the next 12 months. This information will be available in the next release of The Math Resource.
Can two equations be graphed on the same axis?
Currently this is not a function of The MathResource. It is a situation that is being addressed and should be available in the next release. Previous to this we will be asking teachers to test the prototype.
    Where can this be used?
The MathResource can be used at home, in a lab or in a classroom. The ease of use, its robust output, and its depth of coverage make The MathResource an ideal companion for a student, teacher or researcher. A student can use the program to augment the printed materials required for a course in mathematics, science or engineering. An instructor can use The MathResource in the classroom to enhance a lecture. The seamless interface allows for the creation of 2D and 3D plots quickly and without error. Several can be generated from the same window allowing for comparing and contrasting. This can be achieved by simply altering the data in the edit expression windows. A researcher can use The MathResource to refresh their memory on a topic encountered while refereeing ajournal article or thesis.
Is Maple required in order to operate the program?
All the Maple required to operate The MathResource is on the CD ROM. No additional purchases are necessary.
Can the graphs be output to a printer?
The graphs have a "print" and a "save" function, which can be accessed from the "File" menu. This allows the user to save to a Paint or WP package, or to output the graphs as overhead transparencies.
Is a complete version of Maple embedded within The MathResource?
All the Maple required to operate The MathResource is installed on the CD ROM. The functionality of the Maple is flexible enough to support any of the interactive examples presently contained within The MathResource. Large numerical output may not be accessible because of the size of the output window and not because of the Maple. Taylor Series is limited because of the window size for example.
Is there a network version of The MathResource?
A network version of The MathResource will be available in late 1997. Prices for the network version will depend on the teaching level of the institution and the number of machines on the network.
Can the data that generates the output be altered?
The default data that generates the numerical, symbolic and graphical output can be edited or replaced within the edit expression window. When a green highlighted item is selected a dialogue box will open. Default data is displayed in the edit expression window or windows. This data may be changed by substitution or by replacement. The windows expand to handle longer strings of data than may presently be resident in the windows.
    Is there a MacIntosh version?
Currently there is no Mac version. MathResources is working on this and hopefully will have a Mac version before the end of 1997.
